Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) mengungkapkan Indonesia patut mewaspadai dampak yang ditimbulkan oleh gempa yang bersumber dari Megathrust Nankai di timur lepas pantai Pulau Kyushu, Shikoku, dan Kinki, di Jepang Selatan.
Kepala Pusat Gempabumi dan Tsunami BMKG Daryono di Jakarta, Senin, mengatakan Megathrust Nankai adalah salah satu zona seismic gap (zona sumber gempa potensial tetapi belum terjadi gempa besar dalam masa puluhan hingga ratusan tahun terakhir) dan diduga saat ini sedang mengalami proses akumulasi medan tegangan atau stres kerak bumi.

Kemudian Gempa Keichō Nankaido 7,9 magnitudo – Tsunami (3 Februari 1605), Gempa Hoei 8,7 magnitudo – Tsunami (28 Oktober 1707), Gempa Ansei Nankai 8,4 magnitudo – Tsunami (24 Desember 1854), Gempa Nankaido 8,4 magnitudo – Tsunami (21 Desember 1946).
Daryono menjelaskan gempa-gempa dahsyat tersebut hampir semuanya memicu tsunami, karena sistem Megathrust Nankai berpotensi sangat aktif.
Berdasarkan data sejarah gempa menunjukkan zona sumber gempa ini dapat memicu gempa dahsyat yang berkekuatan 8,0 magnitudo hingga lebih di setiap satu atau dua abad.

Di zona megathrust ini terdapat palung bawah laut sepanjang 800 kilometer yang membentang dari Shizouka di sebelah barat Tokyo hingga ujung selatan Pulau Kyushu, sehingga gempa 7,1 magnitudo kemarin dikhawatirkan menjadi pemicu atau pembuka gempa dahsyat berikutnya di Sistem Tunjaman Nankai.
Jika kekhawatiran terjadinya gempa yang disampaikan para ahli Jepang tersebut menjadi kenyataan, lanjutnya, maka akan terjadi gempa dahsyat yang tidak saja berdampak merusak tetapi juga memicu tsunami.
“Jika gempa dahsyat di Megathrust Nankai tersebut benar-benar terjadi dan menimbulkan tsunami maka hal ini perlu kita waspadai, karena tsunami besar di Jepang dapat menjalar hingga wilayah Indonesia,” katanya.
